Mustangs Sweep Matadors for 10th Straight Win

NORTHRIDGE— Sophomore outside hitter Torrey Van Winden finished with 16 kills, hitting .452 and posting seven digs to lead Cal Poly to a sweep of CSUN (25-19, 25-20, 25-20) for its 10th straight win.

The Mustangs (15-2, 5-0) are off to the best start a Cal Poly volleyball team has had since the 1985 team that started 18-1.

The first set of the match saw the Mustangs get down 11-4 at one point. They were able to get it back to 14-12, then went on a 8-1 run to go up 20-16 and would go on to win the set 25-19.

It was a back-and-forth second set until, tied at 15, Cal Poly scored three straight points to up 18-15. They would finish the set 10-5 and win 25-20. Torrey Van Winden had 7 of her 16 kills in the second set.

The Matadors (9-7, 3-1) took an early 5-1 lead to begin the third set. Down 13-10, the Mustangs would score six straight points to go up 16-13. They would not look back from there and would go on to win the set 25-20 to win the match.

Junior outside hitter Adlee Van Winden posted seven kills and three aces. Seniors Savannah Niemen and Raeann Greisen also added seven kills apiece. Senior setter Taylor Nelson finished with a match-high 35 assists and junior libero Katherine Brouker led the Mustangs in digs with 10.

Cal Poly will return to action Saturday on the road against Hawai'i. First serve will be at 10 p.m. PDT.
