SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly volleyball team picked up its third straight win after sweeping UC Riverside 3-0 Friday night.
The Mustangs picked up a quick win against the Highlanders, as they defeated them 25-20, 25-21, 25-18, advancing them to 16-8 overall and 9-4 in conference play.
Riverside took the first point in set one, but Cal Poly quickly tied it up. The Mustangs went on a 6-1 run until the Highlanders scored their second point. The Mustangs kept a steady lead for most of the set, but they did allow the score to tie four times and had three lead changes.
The second set was the closest for the teams, as there were only two lead changes but the score tied four times and tied up to as high as 21-21. With four points left for both teams to take the set, the Mustangs rallied and quickly scored, making it a 2-0 match.
With one set left to win, the Mustangs were neck and neck for the first part of set three, as they tied eight times over eight points. Once the teams were tied 8-8, Cal Poly took the lead for the rest of the set to clinch the match.
Coca-Cola Cal Poly Student Athlete of the Week Taylor Nelson had 33 assists, two blocks and one kill.
Big West Defensive Player of the Week, Katherine Brouker led the team in digs with 17 of the team's 50.
Gruenewald led the team in blocks with four total, contributing to the team's total of five.
The Mustangs had a .295 attack percentage compared to the Highlander's .202
This is the Mustang's second sweep of the season over UC Riverside and their fifth sweep in conference play.
Cal Poly will be back on the court Saturday Nov. 12 to take on Cal State Fullerton in Mott Athletics Center.
