SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After a 25-16 first-set victory, the Cal Poly volleyball team rebounded from a 25-17 setback to claim the next two games 25-18 and 25-20 to close out a 3-1 win over Bakersfield in its home opener at Mott Athletics Center on Friday night.

Nelson also had 27 assists, and Maddie Kuber added 24 in the win. Nicole Kessler had 15 digs, and Greisen made 10.

The Roadrunners pulled to within 11-10 early, but the Mustangs (2-4) went on a 10-0 run to go up 21-10, capped by a Niemen block. A service error ended the opening game.

But Bakersfield quickly turned a 7-5 deficit into a 14-7 advantage thanks to nine consecutive points during Set 2. Cal Poly rallied to trail just 18-14 and 20-16, but couldn't get closer.

The third game saw the Mustangs steadily add to their lead late, scoring three in a row after Bakersfield (2-6) had cut the margin to 17-15. Cal Poly then tallied the last four points of the set, finished off by a Greisen kill on a Nelson assist.

Cal Poly controlled the decisive set from the onset, getting out to a 7-3 lead and then surging ahead 18-9 before holding on late.

The Mustangs will continue their home stand by taking on San Jose State at noon Saturday, before returning to the court to face Sacramento State at 7 p.m.

The other Saturday matches in the MAC are Sacramento State versus Bakersfield at 10 a.m. and San Jose State against Bakersfield at 5 p.m.
