Cal Poly Falls to Cal State Fullerton 4-0 Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis team dropped its Big West Conference match with first-place Cal State Fullerton 4-0 Saturday at Mustang Tennis Complex.

The Mustangs (6-10, 2-4 BWC) nearly completed an epic comeback in doubles to start the match. After the Titans (13-4, 5-1 BWC) won on court one, Cal Poly senior Caroline Williams and sophomore Grace Olyphant tied it up with a 7-5 win on court two. With the win, the duo is now a team-best 7-3 this season.

The Mustangs' No. 3 pair of sophomore MacKenzie Worsnop and senior Caroline Williams found themselves in a 6-6 tie and going into a tiebreaker. After the duo went down 5-0, they rattled off six straight points to take their first lead. The two pairs then traded the next couple points before the Titans narrowly edged out Williams and Worsnop 9-7.

Despite strong battles from a number of the Mustangs in singles, Cal State Fullerton won at the Nos. 3, 5, and 2 spots to seal the 4-0 win.

Cal Poly will play its final home match of the season Sunday against UC Irvine at 11 a.m. from Mustang Tennis Complex. The first 50 fans who come to the match will receive a free SLO Do Co. donut. The team will also celebrate its lone senior, Caroline Williams following the match.
