Cal Poly Women’s Tennis To Play Final Two Home Matches This Weekend

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's tennis program will host its final two home matches of the season this weekend when it hosts Big West opponents Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine.

The Mustangs (6-9, 2-3 BWC) will host Cal State Fullerton Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and UC Irvine Sunday at 11 a.m. for senior day. Both matches will take place at Mustang Tennis Complex.

Sunday's match against UC Irvine will be the final home match for Cal Poly's lone senior Caroline Williams. Williams will have spent two years playing for the Mustangs after spending her first two years at the University of Maryland. To date, Williams has won six singles dual matches and eight doubles dual matches in her Mustang career. She has also been a Big West Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, an honor she won during her junior season.

"Even though Caroline has only been with us for two years she has played an important role in our program's changing culture," head coach Kat Winterhalter had to say about Williams. "Caroline raised the bar when she came to our program with her competitive attitude and her 'team first' outlook. She doesn't complain, she only asks what she can do to be better. In this way, she's been a great role model for her teammates."

Heading into this weekend, Cal Poly currently sits tied for sixth place in the Big West standings. The Mustangs are coming off a 4-3 non-conference loss at Fresno State last weekend. Their two Big West wins this season have come against UC Riverside and CSUN.

The Titans (12-4, 4-1 BWC) are currently in first place in the Big West. They are coming off a 4-0 win over UC Irvine last weekend. Their lone conference loss came at CSUN in March. Cal State Fullerton was the team that knocked the Mustangs out of the Big West Tournament last season in the semifinals.

The Anteaters (13-8, 2-3 BWC) are tied with Cal Poly for sixth place in the Big West. They are coming off back-to-back losses last weekend against Cal State Fullerton and CSUN. The Mustangs have won the last two matchups against UC Irvine. Their last loss to the Anteaters came in 2016.

Following this weekend, Cal Poly will have one more regular-season match remaining. The Mustangs will go on the road to face UC Santa Barbara on April 20.
