Cal Poly Takes Down Santa Clara 4-1 in Home Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Despite a 90-minute rain delay, the Cal Poly women's tennis battled through the rain and wind to win its home opener 4-1 over Santa Clara Saturday.

After the match had its original start time pushed back two hours to let the courts dry, the doubles point came down to a tiebreaker on court two. After the Broncos (1-3) won on court one, the Mustangs (2-3) tied it after junior Susanne Boyden (pictured) and sophomore Grace Olyphant won 6-3 on court three. It all came down to the freshmen tandem on court two of Kimberley Bhunu and Emily Ackerman who fought to win 7-6 (2) and clinch the doubles point for Cal Poly.

In singles, Ackerman got things started for Cal Poly with a 6-1, 6-4 win at the No. 6 position for her first singles win of her career. Olyphant followed suit shortly thereafter with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 spot to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead.

With Cal Poly leading 3-1, Boyden clinched the victory for the Mustangs with a 6-4, 6-2 win at the No. 3 position.

The Mustangs will look to keep the momentum going when they travel to face San Francisco Monday at 11 a.m. Their next home match will be Saturday, March 9th at 10 a.m. against Sacramento State.
