Demijohn, Lafaix Goals Lift Cal Poly to 2-1 Exhibition Win Over Westmont

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Megan Demijohn and Camille Lafaix scored goals on Friday night at Alex G. Spanos Stadium, leading the Cal Poly women's soccer team to a 2-1 preseason scrimmage win over Westmont.

Play remained scoreless through the first half despite Cal Poly holding a 10-3 advantage in shots by the break.

Then 11 minutes into the second half, the Mustangs took the lead when Demijohn, a redshirt junior, started the go-ahead sequence playing the ball out wide to true freshman Olivia Ortiz.

Ortiz dribbled her way around a pair of Warrior defenders along the right edge of the penalty area, before crossing in to Demijohn, who ran onto the feed and beat the onrushing keeper, near-post from close range.

Westmont, however, leveled the match in the 60th minute, when Maddi Berthoud passed ahead to Brooke Porter sprinting upfield. After a collision at the goalmouth with Cal Poly keeper Sophia Brown sent multiple players tumbling to the turf, followed by a brief discussion by officials, the play was ruled a goal, equalizing the exhibition under four minutes after the Mustangs had moved in front.

Cal Poly tallied the game-winner in the 81st minute.

Junior Georgina Stiegeler, a 2017 Big West All-Freshman honoree, curled a pass into the box for Lafaix to set up the go-ahead combination. Lafaix, a recent grad of Archbishop Mitty in San Jose, proceeded to turn and beat Gabi Haw diving to her left, scoring with a right-footed strike into the back of the net.

Cal Poly finished the evening with an 18-6 edge in total shot attempts, as well as a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks. Haw made 10 saves for Westmont, while Brown had two stops for the Mustangs.

The Mustangs played 16 subs on the night, with the 26 field players in all seeing between 11 to 81 minutes apiece, respectively.

Cal Poly's preseason continues with a 7 p.m. exhibition at Fresno State on Sunday at Bulldog Lacrosse/Soccer Field, before wrapping up with a 7 p.m. Green & Gold Intrasquad Scrimmage, back at Spanos Stadium on Friday, Aug. 16.
