UC Davis Tops Cal Poly 2-0 for Big West Conference Road Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — UC Davis scored a goal in each half at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as the Aggie women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 Big West Conference win at Cal Poly.

Freshman Mackenzie George accounted for the first shot-on-goal of the game for the Mustangs in the 27th minute, but Alexis Smith stepped in front to keep the match scoreless.

UC Davis (4-6-2, 1-1-0) took the lead in the 29th minute, when Margot Ridgeway lobbed a pass into the box from 35 yards out on the right flank.

Ridgeway's pass landed right at the feet of Alicia Sloss at the middle of the penalty area, where she turned to score on a right-footed shot that, while impeded by a touch from a Mustangs (1-9-3, 1-1-0) defender, continued to bounce forward, rolling inside the near post.

Freshman Megan Hansen (30') almost answered with a shot on target soon afterward (denied by Smith), and junior Jessica Johnson also had a chance before the break (41'), but her attempt sailed over the crossbar.

Stephanie Magellan forced another save by Smith three minutes after the squads returned to the pitch, but UC Davis would double its lead on a rare corner-kick goal in the 56th minute.

From the left corner flag on the north side of the field, Janae Gonzalez, a junior transfer from Santa Clara, hooked the ball into the net inside the far post, tallying directly off the set piece to put the Aggies in front 2-0.

Johnson tried to answer in the 82nd minute, but Smith was in position for one more save, before freshman Sophia Mendoza found another opening in the 83rd. Her shot, however, was cleared out by the Aggie back line en route to preserving the shutout.

Cal Poly will now embark upon a three-game road stretch, starting at UC Riverside at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by visiting UC Irvine Sunday, Oct. 7 for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
