Cal Poly Opens Big West Conference Play with 1-0 Win Over CSUN

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sydney Knauer scored in the 53rd minute, and Cal Poly's defense earned a shutout to make her goal hold up, leading the Mustang women's soccer team to a Big West Conference-opening 1-0 win over CSUN at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Friday night.

Megan Hansen had the first shot-on-goal of the evening for Cal Poly in the eighth minute, but Matador keeper Amanda Delgado stepped in front to nullify the early threat.

Also before halftime, Clare Murphy (11') and Knauer (15') forced saves from Delgado, while Georgina Stiegeler (12') almost tallied in-between, bending a shot just wide of the far post from above the top-right edge of the box.

Seven minutes after the teams returned to the field following intermission, junior forward Jessica Johnson shot from the top of the penalty area, but Delgado rushed out to block her attempt.

The ball bounced off Delgado in the direction of Knauer, who chipped the rebound into an empty net with a left-footed tap on one touch from 25 yards away. It was the third goal of the season for Knauer, a senior from San Luis Obispo High School.

Cal Poly's Sophia Brown made six saves in the shutout, including an all-out dive to her left in the 74th minute to prevent a Payton Jo Armijo look from equalizing for CSUN (4-4-1, 0-1-0).

Senna Brennan returned to the lineup after a four-game hiatus due to injury, playing all 90 minutes to help lead the back line to the shutout, and Ava McCray also went the distance in a complete-game effort, while teammates Emily Talmi and Chelsea Barry also helped the Mustangs in not conceding.

Johnson (59') again shot on target soon after Knauer's goal, before Hansen (86') returned to test the Matadors once more with a shot on frame four minutes from full time.

Cal Poly (1-8-3, 1-0-0) will return to Spanos Stadium to host UC Davis on Sunday, with kickoff vs. the Aggies set for 12 noon. Admission is free for kids 13-and-under.
