Golden Goal Lifts Cal Baptist to 3-2 Double-OT Win at Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Desarae Felix scored a 104th-minute golden goal at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Sunday, giving the Cal Baptist women's soccer team a 3-2 sudden-death road win against Cal Poly.

Cal Baptist, a first-year member of the WAC, improved to a 7-1-1 start to its first season at the Division I level.

The Lancers took the lead in the 17th minute, when Rebecca Romero slid a left-footed cross over to Jordan Dow, who shot into the top of the net from only a couple yards outside the right post.

Cal Baptist then took a 2-0 lead in the 68th, as Romero sprinted down almost to the goal line from the left flank before angling a shot just inside the far post.

Cal Poly (0-8-3) would get on the board in the 79th minute following a collision with Lancer goalkeeper Romy Salvador.

Mustang sophomore Georgina Stiegeler ran onto a pass into the box, where Salvador, attempting to snare the ball, collided mid-air with her center back. Stiegeler, still on her feet, turned around to chase down the loose ball, sliding to tap it back to Mackenzie George, who slotted it into an empty net off her left foot from 22 yards out.

The Mustangs equalized just over a minute-and-a-half from the end of regulation thanks to senior Chelsea Barry.

The tying goal started when Cal Poly earned an 89th-minute free kick almost 8 yards above the right edge of the penalty area. Barry, an all-regional third-team honoree in 2017, blasted a right-footed strike arcing left of the Lancer wall, sailing into the top-left corner of the goal to force overtime.

Although the two schools combined for six shots in the initial period of extra time (four for CBU and two for Cal Poly), neither team could find the game-winner through 10 additional minutes.

Then almost four minutes into the latter OT, however, Romero chipped from midfield up to Felix. Felix maneuvered behind the Mustang back line for a 1-v-1 opportunity with the keeper, beating her for the decisive goal by aiming into the top-right corner of the net from 8 yards.

The goal was Felix's seventh of the season, while Romero brought her assist total to five through nine matches.

Cal Poly continues a three-game homestand in the week ahead, starting Big West play. The Mustangs will host CSUN (3-3-1) for the conference opener at 7 p.m. Friday, before returning to Spanos Stadium to face UC Davis (3-4-2) at 12 noon Sunday, Sept. 30.
