Late Go-Ahead Goal Gives UC Davis 2-1 Home Win Over Cal Poly

DAVIS, Calif. — Cal Poly sophomore Senna Brennan scored an equalizer in the 62nd minute on Thursday evening at UC Davis, but the Aggies tallied the game-winner eight minutes from full time to pick up a 2-1 Big West Conference women's soccer home victory against the Mustangs.

UC Davis pulled in front just over seven minutes in, when McKenna Moriarty headed a corner kick from Mandy McKeegan into the top-left netting at the left post.

Senior Megan Abutin accounted for Cal Poly's first shot on goal in the ninth minute, but Alexis Smith made the save.

Mustang sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Brown saved a Crystal Crump shot in the 15th minute, and also denied Mahlah Catline (23'), Kristie Braken-Guelke (28') and Aliyah Walker (35') before intermission.

Meanwhile on the other end, Brennan shot on target in the 16th minute, along with sophomore Jordan Patane placing an attempt on goal in the 25th.

Cal Poly leveled the match 17 minutes after halftime, as Brennan, a transfer from St. John's, angled a corner kick in for a rare goal from the flag.

The Mustangs (5-8-1, 0-3-0 Big West) nearly took the lead seven minutes later, but Smith was again in position to snare a header by senior Emily Hansen.

Catline created a crucial 1-v-1 opportunity for herself in the 82nd minute, settling an overhead pass and capitalizing with a shot into the left side for the go-ahead goal.

Cal Poly, which had a 14-9 edge in overall shots for the game — as well as an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks — earned one final corner two minutes from the end of regulation, but the UCD (3-9-0, 2-0-0) back line made the clearance to hold on for the win.

All but one of the Mustangs' losses this season have been by a one-goal margin. The Mustangs' road trip will continue on Sunday at CSUN, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field.
