Flood Goal, Viboch Shutout Lead Cal Poly to Third Straight Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — McKenzie Flood scored a first-half goal while fellow senior Brittney Viboch earned a shutout, leading the Cal Poly women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Denver on Thursday night in Alex G. Spanos Stadium, the Mustangs' third straight win.

Flood tallied her third career goal via a 34th-minute combination with junior Ashley Kirchick, running onto a feed inside the box and beating Pioneer goalkeeper Brittany Wilson with a shot into the right side of the net.

The Mustangs (5-4-1) had a 15-11 edge in total shots, as well as a 5-0 edge in corners on the evening.

Kirchick would also place a shot on goal in the 37th minute, before senior Megan Abutin forced a save in the 38th.

Chelsea Barry delivered a free kick on frame in the 56th, before sophomore Jessica Johnson (63') and junior Stephanie Magellan (86') also tested Wilson.

Johnson also nearly doubled the lead two minutes from full time, hitting off the crossbar.

Viboch made her first save in the 25th minute, and made ensuing stops in the 50th, 55th and 61st en route to her second shutout over a three-match span.

Cal Poly will conclude non-conference play by hosting Santa Clara (4-5-1), which made the Elite Eight last season, at 12 noon Sunday.

Sunday's game against the Broncos will also be Youth Day in Spanos Stadium, with free admission for all kids 13-and-under.
