Demijohn Golden Goal Lifts Cal Poly to 2-1 Double-OT Win Over Pacific

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Sophomore Megan Demijohn scored the second golden goal of her Cal Poly career on Sunday, tallying the game-winner four minutes into the second overtime against Pacific, leading the Mustang women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory before a crowd of 712 in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, the Tigers struck first in the 53rd minute, when Julia Beck chipped into the box for Ashley Arnett, who tapped her first goal of the fall into the left side of the net from only a few yards away.

Cal Poly equalized in the 75th minute, as redshirt freshman Georgina Stiegeler was taken down inside the penalty area on a breakaway. Mustang senior Megan Abutin came to the spot to convert the PK, leveling the match between the two former Big West Conference rivals.

The goal was Abutin's 18th for her career, moving to a tie for No. 8 in school history.

After remaining tied through the end of regulation, both sides battled scoreless through the first 10-minute overtime, as well as a little more than three minutes into the second extra period.

Then in the 104th minute, Demijohn recovered a loose ball 25 yards out, rounded her defender and scored with a low shot to the far post, bouncing in off the left corner.

Demijohn also accounted for the goal in the Mustangs' 1-0 win over Sacramento State on Friday night. As a freshman a year ago, she also netted a 95th-minute sudden-death winner vs. San Francisco.

Cal Poly (4-4-1) had a 21-11 advantage in overall shots for the afternoon, as well as an 11-6 edge in shots placed on frame and a 9-4 discrepancy in corner kicks. The Mustangs were also whistled for nine offsides to four for the Tigers (2-6-2).

Mustang senior goalkeeper Brittney Viboch made five saves in the win, and senior midfielder Emily Hansen made her 62nd career start, tying for the 15th-most all-time at Cal Poly.

Cal Poly will continue its six-game homestand by hosting Denver at 7 p.m. Thursday before returning to Spanos Stadium vs. 2016 Elite Eight qualifier Santa Clara at 12 noon Sunday, Sept. 24.
