Cal Poly Tops Sacramento State for 1-0 Win in 2017 Home Opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Megan Demijohn scored a 10th-minute goal on Friday night, and Mustang goalkeepers Sophia Brown and Brittney Viboch combined for a shutout by playing one half each as the Cal Poly women's soccer team won its 2017 home opener, 1-0 over Sacramento State.

The Alex G. Spanos Stadium crowd of 2,789 ranked No. 12 nationally throughout the NCAA so far during this season.

Cal Poly freshman Emma Hotaling had the evening's first shot on goal, but Aaliyah Fesili came up with a save in the fifth minute.

Just five minutes later, though, redshirt freshman Georgina Stiegeler found some space above the top-left edge of the box before sliding a short pass to Demijohn. Demijohn then dribbled a few yards into the penalty area and aimed far-post, just over the extended reach of Fesili, into the upper-right corner for the game-winner.

It was the second career goal for the sophomore from Thousand Oaks, who also tallied her first at Spanos (a golden goal in overtime vs. San Francisco as a freshman).

Other Mustang shots on goal came from senior Emily Hansen (14') and junior Stephanie Magellan (55').

Brown made saves in the 18th and 32nd minutes before going down with an injury. Before the break, Cal Poly (3-4-1) also staved off a Hornets (4-4-0) opportunity when junior defender Chelsea Barry stepped in front of a point-blank shot by Kayla Collins for the team save.

To start the second half, Viboch came on in goal. She held on to the shutout with a save of a Bonnie Ford shot four minutes from full time. Sacramento State also shot over the crossbar with just over a minute remaining.

Cal Poly will continue its six-match homestand on Sunday vs. Pacific, kicking off vs. the Tigers at 12 noon. As part of Youth Day, admission is free for all kids 13-and-under, and Cal Poly Soccer scarfs will be handed out to the first 100 fans.
