Cal Poly, San Francisco Play to 2-2 Draw as Abutin Scores Twice

SAN FRANCISCO — Cal Poly senior Megan Abutin scored her 16th and 17th career goals on Sunday, leading the Mustang women's soccer team to a 2-2 road draw with San Francisco at Negoesco Stadium.

USF struck first just under three minutes in, as Sonja Giraud corralled a loose ball at the top of the box and proceeded to score with a shot to the lower-left corner.

Cal Poly equalized in the ninth minute, as Abutin arced in a rare goal from a corner kick.

Abutin, a preseason All-Big West Conference selection, then put the Mustangs ahead 2-1 in the 83rd minute with a left-footed blast inside the box.

The Dons (2-1-1) forced overtime with an 87th-minute free kick from 25 yards by Samantha Jehnings.

Four minutes into the first OT, Cal Poly junior Chelsea Barry (who scored in Wednesday's victory at CSU Bakersfield) placed a shot on goal. Barry again shot on frame with 7:25 remaining, but Don goalkeeper Olivia Camera was in position for one last save (her 10th of the afternoon).

Mustang sophomore Sophia Brown made eight saves in the tie.

It was the second consecutive match in which Cal Poly had a 6-4 advantage in corners.

Following the brace — her third career multi-goal performance — Abutin's 17 career goals now rank tied for ninth all-time at Cal Poly. Abutin also was a Hoosier Challenge Cup All-Tournament honoree earlier this fall.

The Mustangs (1-2-1) will return at the Boise State Tournament next weekend, facing the host Broncos at 4 p.m. PDT Friday and then Oregon at 10 a.m. Sunday.
