Cal Poly Women's Soccer Wraps Up Spring With Awards At Banquet

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's soccer program held its annual banquet on Saturday night at Avila Beach Resort, shortly after wrapping up the 2017 spring schedule earlier in the day.

The Mustangs' MVP and Offensive Player of the Year honors went to graduating all-purpose senior Kendra Bonsall.

Bonsall played every position except goalkeeper during her career, spanning 70 games from 2013-16. Her 60 career starts rank tied for 19th in school history. An all-conference second-team selection last season, she played every minute of 13 matches as a senior.

In addition to her six goals and three assists when in the attack or midfield, Bonsall played in 23 shutouts as a Mustang.

Defensive Player of the Year accolades went to Chelsea Barry, set to be a junior this fall. Barry played all but nine minutes on the season (1,771'), a team-high total in the field, en route to also making the All-Big West Second Team.

As well as her work as a defender, Barry struck the TopDrawerSoccer National Goal of the Week on Oct. 13 against UC Santa Barbara, and also distributed three assists in 2016.

Most Improved Player honors were awarded to sophomore-to-be Jordan Patane. Patane played all 19 matches as a freshman, including three of her four starts in the last seven games.

The team's Most Inspirational Player distinction was awarded to graduated midfielder Breanna Rittmann. A redshirt senior, Rittmann overcame multiple injuries to finish her career as a co-captain in 2016.

The Rookie of the Year award went to goalkeeper Sophia Brown. Brown played the entire season, earning Big West Defensive Player of the Week honors on Aug. 22, going on to finish with a 1.31 GAA and a .780 save percentage. Her 92 saves rank No. 7 in single-season school history.

After an initial spring exhibition date at Westmont was rained out on April 8, Cal Poly scrimmaged at Santa Clara, vs. the Cal Poly Club Team, at Fresno State and hosted Fresno City College from April 23 through May 6, going a combined 2-1-1.

During the four games, Kelly Kessloff, Lexi Marietti and Macy Vrabel each scored two goals apiece, while Ashley Kirchick and Jessica Johnson also tallied goals.

Meanwhile in addition to Brown, seniors Brittney Viboch and Domenique Banta also played in goal.

The finalized upcoming regular-season schedule, spanning August to November, will be announced soon.
