Brown Named Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly freshman goalkeeper Sophia Brown was named the Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

In her first weekend as a Mustang starter, Brown made 10 saves in Cal Poly's 1-0 loss at No. 18/15 Cal on Friday evening, before stopping two more shots in a 2-0 shutout win at Pacific on Sunday afternoon.

She compiled a .923 save percentage during the opening two games, ranking No. 1 in the conference.

The Mustang defense, featuring seniors Kendra Bonsall and Shannon Stabler, junior Emily Hansen, sophomore Chelsea Barry and redshirt freshman Lexi Marietti, helped Brown blank the Tigers for the program's 186th shutout all-time.

Brown was the overall CIF Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2015-16 at Foothill High School in Pleasanton.

UC Santa Barbara junior Amanda Ball, who had a hat trick in the Gauchos' 3-2 overtime win at Fresno State on Friday, earned the initial Offensive Player of the Week accolade.

The Mustangs will host their home opener at 7 p.m. Friday against San Francisco. It's also Youth Night, as attendance will be free for fans under 13, and a clinic will also be offered from 5-6 p.m. Cal Poly will return to Alex G. Spanos Stadium to face Saint Mary's at 12 noon Sunday.
