Kessloff, Kreutz Score in 2-0 Cal Poly Road Shutout of Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. — Cal Poly sophomores Kelly Kessloff and Caitlyn Kreutz tallied first-half goals on Sunday afternoon, leading the Mustang women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Pacific at Knoles Field.

Cal Poly created the game's first two shots in the 18th minute, as senior Kendra Bonsall forced a save before sophomore Macy Vrabel followed up with an attempt that was blocked.

After junior McKenzie Flood fired wide in the 28th minute, the Mustang pressure paid off in the 42nd, when sophomore Chelsea Barry lofted a corner kick in to Kessloff. Kessloff (pictured) headed it in for her first career regulation goal, following her team-leading four from this past spring exhibition season from April to May.

Then the Mustangs added another goal with just over 40 seconds remaining until halftime when, following a scramble with the Tigers inside the box, sophomore Stephanie Magellan passed to Kreutz for the close-range tap (the eighth in the career of the 2015 Big West All-Freshman Team honoree).

Freshman Sophia Brown, who made 10 saves in the 1-0 loss at No. 18 Cal on Friday evening, denied UOP's Sigrid Aas in the 48th minute and Taylor Clarin in the 74th to earn the clean sheet.

In addition to Barry and Bonsall, junior Emily Hansen stayed on the pitch for the duration, and seniors Nicole Wheeler and Shannon Stabler, as well as redshirt freshman Lexi Marietti, also were key in defense to help Brown chalk up her first collegiate shutout.

Mustang sophomore Sydney Knauer also placed a second-half shot on target, testing Tiger goalkeeper Lena Perry in the 59th minute.

Other Cal Poly chances came on 51' (when freshman Jessica Johnson aimed high in her second consecutive match with a shot), 52' (Wheeler; blocked) and 77' (Barry; blocked).

Cal Poly will now host its home opener against San Francisco at 7 p.m. Friday (also Youth Night) before returning to Alex G. Spanos Stadium at 12 noon Sunday to face Saint Mary's.
