Late Golden Goal Carries UC Davis to 1-0 Win Over Visiting Cal Poly

DAVIS, Calif. — The Cal Poly and UC Davis women's soccer teams battled scoreless for more than 107 minutes Thursday evening at Aggie Soccer Field, before the hosts found a sudden-victory goal with two-and-a-half minutes remaining until a draw in the Big West Conference opener.

One of Cal Poly's best chances unfolded in the 26th minute, when freshman Kelly Kessloff forced Alexis Smith into a save.

A minute later, junior Megan Abutin and freshman Caitlyn Kreutz tested Smith again with a point-blank try followed by a rebound.

Mustang senior Elise Krieghoff also put a shot on goal in the 57th.

Meanwhile, Cal Poly senior Alyssa Giannetti made saves in the 11th, 31st, 54th, 80th, 85th and 101st minutes.

With the outcome of a tie looming, UC Davis (8-3-1) scored on 108', as Haley Hughes fired a ball from Kristina Sola into the upper-right netting for the game-winner.

In a close contest that saw a combined 10 offsides calls and two yellow cards shown to each side, the Mustangs earned more corners on the day, with nine compared to the Aggies' seven.

Cal Poly (4-3-5), which for the first time this fall lost to a team not ranked within the top five of the latest national coaches poll, will now travel to Hawai'i for a game set for 8 p.m. PDT Sunday in Waipahu.
