Green Side Edges White 2-1 in Cal Poly Soccer Intrasquad Scrimmage

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — With a goal in each half, the Cal Poly Green squad edged its White counterparts at the Mustang women's soccer team's season-opening intrasquad scrimmage on a warm Saturday afternoon, 2-1 in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

White created the first couple chances, with sophomore midfielder Emily Hansen shooting wide-right a minute in, followed by freshman teammate Sydney Knauer having a seventh-minute shot blocked.

In the ninth minute, though, Green took the lead when senior forward Elise Krieghoff accepted a cross from junior Megan Abutin near the top-left corner of the 18-yard box and put away a strike inside the far post.

Green kept applying pressure, as senior goalkeeper Alyssa Giannetti saved shots fired by freshman Chelsea Barry (in the 21st minute) and Abutin (22').

On an unassisted goal from freshman Ashley Kirchick, however, White equalized in the 34th minute. Then five minutes before halftime, freshman forward Caitlyn Kreutz made a run in from the right side and sent a shot just wide-left, leaving the teams drawn at the break.

Three minutes into the second half, senior Allie Bégin took a shot that went wide-left, and a minute later, Kreutz forced senior goalkeeper Heather Rouhier into a save. White answered with a 55th-minute shot on frame from Kirchick (Giannetti's third save of the match), and then a barely wide-left try from junior midfielder Cassandra Fäsi in the 57th.

The game-winner came in the 69th minute when Abutin raced down the left side, stopped, pivoted and chipped the keeper from the perimeter of the penalty area.

Only a minute afterward, Hansen nearly brought White level, turning a spot-on free kick from junior Nicole Wheeler into a close-range shot that ricocheted off the crossbar. Abutin also nearly recorded a brace, as she hit the left post on an 85th-minute attempt.

Redshirt freshman Brittney Viboch saw the final eight minutes in goal during the Green win.

After a 1 p.m. Monday exhibition at Westmont, Cal Poly will open the regular season at San Francisco at 7 p.m. Friday.
