Krieghoff, Abutin Score in 2-0 Cal Poly Win Over San Jose State

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A goal in each half was more than enough for the Cal Poly women's soccer team on Friday afternoon, as the Mustangs put together their first shutout of the young season for a 2-0 win at San Jose State.

The Mustangs' sixth and final shot before intermission on Spartan Soccer Field was the difference-maker, as Elise Krieghoff beat the goalkeeper to the bottom-left corner in the 40th minute.

It was the 34th career goal for the junior, who's now five back of No. 2 all-time in school history (and 11 shy of tying the program record). Krieghoff also had shots that were blocked in the first, 16th and 17th minutes, as well as two more that went over the crossbar in the 35th and 71st.

Also before halftime, Allie Bégin attempted a header (16') that was saved.

The second goal came in the 82nd minute, after Megan Abutin took a pass from Katarina Drake on the right side and proceeded to aim high, inside the far post. Zoe Makrigiannis dove to get a hand on the ball, but the effort could only impede its trajectory so much.

It wasn't the first time of the day those two got involved in the attack, either; Abutin saw a 52nd-minute shot blocked, 25 minutes before Drake placed a shot of her own on target.

Alyssa Giannetti made a 28th-minute save for the Mustangs, and later finalized the shutout by stonewalling shots in the 48th and 63rd. It was the 10th shutout of the junior's career (11th including a shared clean sheet).

Cal Poly (2-2-0) will stay in the Bay Area to take on No. 12 Cal (5-0-0) at 4 p.m. Sunday in a match that will be televised by the Pac-12 Network from Goldman Field.
