CINCINNATI, OH – Freshman Sara Lancaster scored her first goal as a Mustang, a game winner as the Mustangs defeated the University of Cincinnati 2-1 in Cal Poly's 2011 season opener.
Lancaster scored the game winner in the 87th minute breaking a 1-1 from the first half.
With the win Cal Poly opens the season 1-0 and will face the University of Dayton on Sunday while Cincinnati falls to 0-1.
Cincinnati opened the game scoring in the sixth minute when Mackenzie Grause off an assist from Christi Howard. Julie McKee evened the score when she hit a one-timer unassisted in the 33rd minute.
In the first half Cal Poly was outshot 5-2 with both the Mustang shots on goal while Cincinnati put two shots on goal. Afton Thulin had the Mustangs second shot on goal in the 38th minute.
The Bearcats opened the final period with two quick shots in the opening minutes, one by Kelli Pawelko that went high and another by Jazmine Rhodes that was blocked.
Cincinnati backed it up with two more shots in the 63rd minute, neither on goal, just after Cal Poly's McKenzie Orand was whistled for a yellow card.
Goalie Booke Gauvin made two saves in the 71st minute when Cincinnati put two of three shots on goal.
After another shot by Cincinnati, Cal Poly responded with two shots on goal. Thulin put her second shot on goal while Tiffany Gummow had a shot on goal, both in the 77th minute.
The game winner came in the 87th minute when Lancaster put an unassisted shot in the back of the net.
The Mustangs were outshot 17-6 but had five shots on goal while Cincinnati only had four shots on goal.
The Bearcats took eight corners compared to Cal Poly's two while the Mustangs were whistled for 11 fouls to the Bearcats eight.
Gauvin recorded the win for the Mustangs with seven saves while Kristina Utley tookthe loss with three saves.
