MORAGA, Calif. – The Cal Poly women's soccer team could not overcome three first half goals in a 3-1 loss against Saint Mary's in a non-conference game on Sunday in Moraga. With the loss the Mustangs fall to 3-3 while Saint Mary's improves to 3-1-1.
Each team took 11 shots with the Gaels holding the edge with five shots on goal compared to the Mustangs three.
Saint Mary's held the edge, 3-2, on corner kicks while getting whistled for fouls 11 times compared to Cal Poly's nine.
In the first period Saint Mary's took seven shots, four on goal with three finding the back of the net.
Cal Poly matched Saint Mary's with seven shots with only two on goal.
The Gaels broke through early, scoring their fist goal in the 16th minute when Jordan Marada scored her first goal of the season when she got a shot off inside the box after a pass from Alyssa Stearns. Kaytlyn Steele followed up a minute latter with one of her own from the top of the box off a pass by Christina Tognetti.
The Gaels third goal of the period came in the 33rd minute when Marada scored her second goal of the half from close in off the left wing.
The Mustangs had their opportunities in the 31st minute when a header by Jess Duller was saved by the Saint Mary's goalie.
In the 20th minute Tiffany Gummow, from close in, sent a shot high while Sara Lancaster fired a shot from the top of the box in the 17th minute only to have Kate Brenot make a diving save.
Late in the second half Tiffany Gummow scored her first goal of the season off a free kick from 20 yards out.
The Mustangs will return to the field on September 9th when they travel to Portland to play a match against Seattle. Cal Poly will follow that game up on September 11th when they take on Boise State
