Three Falls Power Northern Colorado to Dual Meet Win Over Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Tom Lane and Ty Schilling won by major decision while Yoshito Funakoshi and Nathan Tausch earned decisions, but Northern Colorado scored falls in the first two bouts and pulled away for a 28-13 victory in a non-conference dual wrestling meet Friday night inside Mott Athletics Center.
Lane upset No. 15 Jacob Seely 12-2 at 197 pounds for his seventh win in his last eight bouts while Schilling led all the way in a 10-2 win over Armando Santillan at 149 pounds for Cal Poly's only bonus points of the dual meet.
Funakoshi was a 9-2 winner at 133 while Tausch earned an 8-4 decision at 174 to complete the scoring for the Mustangs, who fell to 0-4 on the year.
Northern Colorado, now 3-5, scored three falls, one major and two decisions for the victory.
Lane (pictured above) improved to 15-8 for the year as he overcame an early takedown with a reversal and a pair of two-point near falls in the first period. The junior from Garden City, N.Y., added a penalty point for stalling in the second period and pulled away with a takedown, two more penalty points and riding time.
Schilling bumped his record up to 10-8 with a takedown in the opening period, a four-point near fall in the second period and an escape, takedown and riding time in the final period for his third major decision of the year.
Funakoshi collected three takedowns, two escapes and riding time for his win over Sean Cannon and Tausch garnered four takedowns for the victory at 174. Funakoshi is now 7-6 on the season while Tausch improved to 6-9.
Robert Winters at 285, No. 17 Rico Montoya at 125 and Dalton Robertson at 184 won by fall for Northern Colorado, which wrestles at CSU Bakersfield on Sunday.
Cal Poly continues its seven-match home stand in two weeks, hosting Oregon State for a Pac-12 dual on Saturday, Feb. 2, starting at 1 p.m.
