SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Hosting its first seven dual meets of the 2018-19 season, the Cal Poly wrestling team's third dual is a Pac-12 Conference matchup with CSU Bakersfield on Friday night inside Mott Athletics Center.
First bout begins at 7 p.m.
Cal Poly has hosted just two duals so far, losses to Cal Baptist and Northwestern. Instead, the Mustangs have concentrated on seven tournaments during the first two months of the season.
Topping the list of performances for the Mustangs was a sixth-place finish by 197-pounder Tom Lane at the 56th annual Midlands Championships near Chicago, Illinois. Lane battled back from an opening-round loss to win five consecutive bouts in the wrestlebacks and is 13-8 on the year.
Joshy Cortez placed third at 157 pounds in the Roadrunner Open while three Mustangs placed in the Black Knight Invitational at Army West Point. Yoshito Funakoshi finished second at 133 pounds, Brawley Lamer was fourth at 157 and Ty Schilling claimed fifth place at 149.
Cal Poly also competed in two tournaments hosted by Menlo College as well as in the Las Vegas Invitational and the Reno Tournament of Champions.
CSU Bakersfield sports a 3-4 dual meet record with wins over Life Pacific, San Francisco State and Kent State. The Roadrunners have wrestled one Pac-12 dual so far, a 20-17 loss at Oregon State on Dec. 9.
Roadrunner third-year head coach Manny Rivera will bring a pair of nationally ranked wrestlers with him to Friday's dual meet.
Junior 149-pounder Russell Rohlfing is ranked No. 15 by WIN Magazine and sports an 11-6 record so far this season while Sean Nickell is 13-7 on the year and ranked 18th at 133 pounds. Both are two-time national qualifiers.
In addition to Lane, Cal Poly's other wrestlers in Friday's lineup with winning records are Funakoshi (6-5), 184-pounder Willem DeBoer (9-7) and Schilling (9-7). Lamer (pictured above) sports a 9-9 mark.
Last year, CSU Bakersfield earned a 28-15 victory over Cal Poly in Bakersfield, lifting its advantage over the Mustangs in the all-time series to 29-20-2. Cal Poly beat the Roadrunners 21-18 two seasons ago at Righetti High School in Santa Maria.
