HOFFMAN ESTATES, Illinois -- Needing one victory to medal in the 56th annual Midlands Championships, Cal Poly 197-pounder Tom Lane, seeded eighth, upset No. 5 seed Andrew Davison of Michigan in the wrestle back quarterfinals Sunday morning.
Lane, however, forfeited his next two matches due to an injury and placed sixth in the prestigious two-day midseason tournament held inside Sears Centre Arena just outside Chicago.
Lane, who went 3-1 in the first day of competition Saturday, earned a 4-2 decision over Davison to secure placement in the 35-team tournament that attracted many of the nation's Top 20 Division I wrestling programs. He then defeated 12th-seeded Brett Perry of Buffalo 11-6.
Lane was forced to forfeit his next two matches to No. 6 seed Lucas Davison of Northwestern and second-seeded Jacob Warner of Iowa due to injury, leaving his record for the season at 13-8.
Cal Poly's other three entries in the Midlands -- 133-pounder Yoshito Funakoshi, 157-pounder Brawley Lamer and 184-pounder Nathan Tausch -- were eliminated Saturday. Lamer went 3-2 while Funakoshi and Tausch were 0-2.
The Mustangs placed 29th as a team with 18 points. Iowa claimed the team title with 184 points, followed by Northern Iowa with 119.5 and Northwestern with 110.
Coach Jon Sioredas' Mustangs return to action Jan. 11 with the first of five consecutive home dual meets, hosting CSU Bakersfield at 7 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
