SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After a layoff of more than two weeks due to Fall Quarter finals, the Cal Poly wrestling team returns to action Monday night with a non-conference dual meet against No. 24 Northwestern of the Big Ten Conference.
First match inside Mott Athletics Center is set for 7 p.m.
Northwestern is visiting San Luis Obispo for the third straight year. The Wildcats posted 30-8 victories over the Mustangs in both previous meetings for a 3-0 advantage in the series. The two teams also met in the Windy City Duals in December 2014, Northwestern earning a 38-12 triumph.
Cal Poly (0-1) has competed in just one dual meet so far, falling to Cal Baptist 28-10 on Nov. 10. Northwestern (1-2) opened with a 26-17 loss at North Dakota State, then upset No. 10 Virginia Tech 20-16 on Nov. 18 before falling to Old Dominion 30-10 on Dec. 7.
The Wildcats, ranked No. 24 this week by WIN Magazine, will wrestle Stanford in Mott Athletics Center at 5 p.m. before taking on the Mustangs.
A quartet of Northwestern wrestlers are ranked by WIN Magazine this week, led by a pair of No. 2 matmen.
Sebastian Rivera is ranked No. 2 at 125 pounds while Ryan Deakin sports a similar ranking at 157. Both are sophomores.
In addition, Johnny Sebastian owns a No. 11 ranking at 174 pounds while Conan Jennings is No. 15 at 285. Both are seniors.
All four were NCAA qualifiers a year ago, Rivera claiming sixth place at 125 pounds for All-American honors after a fifth-place finish in the Big 10 Championships. Sebastian was fourth at 174 pounds in the Big 10 finals, Jennings fifth at 285 and Deakin sixth at 149.
Coach Jon Sioredas' Mustang wrestlers earned three first-place finishes, a trio of runners-up and a pair of thirds at the season-opening Menlo Open on Nov. 3. Benny Martinez placed first at 125 pounds, Yoshito Funakoshi took the 133-pound crown and Joshy Cortez won the 157-pound championship. Bernie Truax (149), Dylan Miracle (165) and Nathan Tausch (174) all finished second while Willem DeBoer (197) and Samuel Aguilar (285) placed third.
At the Black Knight Invitational hosted by Army West Point on Nov. 18, Funakoshi finished second at 133, Brawley Lamer was fourth at 157 and Ty Schilling (pictured above) placed fifth at 149. Cortez earned a third-place finish in the Roadrunner Open, also on Nov. 18.
No Mustangs placed in the 37th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 1-2, Cal Poly's last competition.
Lane, Cal Poly's lone returning NCAA qualifier, is 4-4 on the young season while Cortez sports an 8-1 mark, Funakoshi 5-3 and Schilling 3-3.
Also wrestling for Cal Poly against Northwestern are Martinez (4-5) at 125, Ryan Farina (3-7) at 141, Lamer (3-4) at 157, Miracle (2-6) at 165, Tausch (4-4) at 174, Jack Huber (2-7) at 184 and Aguilar (5-6) at 285.
Six of the 10 Mustangs on Monday's card are true or redshirt freshmen.
The Mustangs will compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions next Thursday and the Midlands in Chicago on Dec. 29-30.
Cal Poly will host five more dual meets after the New Year, hosting CSU Bakersfield on Jan. 11 and Oregon State on Feb. 2 for Pac-12 matches and Northern Colorado on Jan. 18, Fresno State on Feb. 9 and Air Force on Feb. 10 in non-conference matchups.
After two more Pac-12 dual meets on the road in February, the Mustangs will compete in the Pac-12 Championship on March 9 at Arizona State, with the NCAA Division I National Championship slated for March 21-23 inside PPG Paints Arena at Pittsburgh, Penn.
