MARICOPA, Ariz. -- Cal Poly posted four-person rounds of 299 and 292 on the first day of competition in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Monday and sits in sixth place among 20 teams with one more round to play.
UTEP leads the way with a 10-over-par 586 total, two shots ahead of both New Mexico State and Santa Clara. Cal Poly is just five strokes off the pace entering Tuesday's final round.
Vanessa Wang (pictured at right) is Cal Poly's top finisher after 36 holes of play, carding a 73 and 71 on the Southern Dunes Golf Club course and is tied for eighth place while Mallory Muehlbauer is tied for 13th place with rounds of 76 and 70.
Other Cal Poly scorers include Caroline Cantlay, tied for 33rd place with a 76 and 74; Elizabeth Scholtes with a 74 and 77 for a 40th-place tie; and Sienna Scibird with a 78 and 79 for a tie for 82nd place.
Individual leader after two rounds is Suthavee Chanachai of New Mexico State with an eight-under-par 136 total following rounds of 67 and 69. Chanachai is three shots ahead of both Beah Cruz of Northern Colorado and Tara Finigan of Boise State.
