SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly freshman Elizabeth Scholtes has been named Big West Conference Women's Golfer of the Month for February.
A graduate of Alameda High School, Scholtes shared medalist honors at the Mustangs' first spring tournament, shooting a 4-under aggregate of 212 at the Battle of the Rock, hosted by fellow Big West member UC Riverside, to tie with USC individual Alyaa Abdulghany for the best 54-hole score.
Abdulghany took home the first-place trophy by winning a playoff against Scholtes on the second hole.
In shooting rounds of 68, 72 and 72, Scholtes posted career-bests for two rounds (140) and three rounds (212). The 68 in the opening round also was just two shy of the school record.
Scholtes also finished in a tie for 29th at the Bruin-Wave Invitational, shooting back-to-back 75 in the first two rounds and finishing with an 80 at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.
As a team, Cal Poly finished second at the Battle at the Rock and 11th at the Bruin-Wave Invitational. The Mustangs competed against five teams ranked in the Top 20 and 10 in the top 50 at the Bruin-Wave Invitational. Outside of the ranked teams, Cal Poly was the top finisher.
Scholtes is averaging 74.6 strokes over 15 rounds so far this season with four rounds of par or better. The Mustangs are competing at the Gunrock Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento.
