KAPALUA, Hawaii — Sophie Bergland carded a hole-in-one and briefly held the individual lead after 11 holes of play in the first round of the Anuenue Spring Break Classic on Monday on The Bay Course at Kapalua Resort.
Bergland, who aced the 138-yard 17th hole with an eight-iron, finished the round with a one-over-par 73 on the 6,012-yard, par-72 course and is tied for seventh place with two other golfers.
Bergland carded the ace, three birdies, four bogeys and a double-bogey.
Three other Mustang golfers are in the top 40 entering Tuesday's second round.
Caroline Cantlay carded a 77 for 28th place while Desiree Gillaspy and Jamie Harada both recorded 78s and are tied for 39th place. Mallory Muehlbauer completed Cal Poly's scoring with an 81 for 62nd place.
As a team, Cal Poly is tied for seventh place with UC Davis with a four-person 306 total.
Hawaii leads the 13-team field with a 290 aggregate, followed by Louisville at 296 and Oregon State at 301.
Individual leader after 18 holes is Kaci Masuda of Hawaii with a three-under-par 69, one stroke ahead of Utah Valley's Ana Margarita Raga. Lauren Hartlage of Louisville and Kristin Le of Santa Clara share third place with 71s.
The 54-hole event winds up Wednesday morning.
