SAN JOSE, Calif. — Sophie Bergland claimed a top-20 finish to lead Cal Poly in the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at the Almaden Golf and Country Club.
Bergland (pictured at right) carded a final-round 75 to finish with a 54-hole eight-over-par 224 total on the 6,190-yard, par-72 course, tied for 11th place with three other golfers.
Teammate Desiree Gillaspy finished in a tie for 27th place with a final-round 81 and a 231 total while Jamie Binns was 40th with a 78 and a 233 aggregate.
Kendra Dalton of Brigham Young edged My Leander of San Jose State by two strokes for medalist honors. Dalton posted a 71 for a four-under-par 212 total and Leander checked in with a 73 for a 214 aggregate. They were the only two golfers in the field to break par.
Brigham Young claimed the team title for the first time with an 18-over-par four-person 882 total, followed by San Jose State at 885 and Colorado at 893.
Cal Poly climbed one spot into 10th place, edging San Francisco by nine strokes, 919 to 928. The Mustangs carded a 305 total Tuesday.
Bergland and Jamie Harada were fourth in par-3 scoring at even par. Bergland also was fourth in pars with 38.
Cal Poly returns to action Oct. 1-2 at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational hosted by Seattle University at the Tacoma Country Club.
