Hirsch Posts Top-20 Finish, Cal Poly 12th in Red Raider Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas — Senior Madison Hirsch earned her fifth top-20 finish of the season and led the Cal Poly women's golf team to a 12th-place finish in the Texas Tech Red Raider Invitational on Saturday at The Rawls Course.

Hirsch (pictured at right) carded a final-round 77 and finished with a career-best 54-hole six-over-par 222 total on the 6,541-yard, par-72 layout, finishing in a tie for 13th place with five other golfers.

Coach Sofie Aagaard's Mustangs posted a four-person final-round 322 total for a 57-over-par 921 aggregate and 12th place, slipping two positions on the final day of the 14-team tournament.

Texas Tech climbed from fourth place into the championship of its own tournament, carding a 287 Saturday for a three-over-par 867 total, 13 shots ahead of second-place Purdue (880). Kansas was another shot back in third place while second-round leader BYU fell into a fifth-place tie with Iowa.

Individual winner was Yupaporn Kawinpakorn of Kansas with a final-round 72 for a seven-under-par 209 total, one shot in front of runner-up Sarah Brown of Texas Tech. Anna Appert Lund of Purdue finished third at 214.

In addition to Hirsch, Cal Poly's other scoring golfers include Jamie Harada with a final-round 82 for a 231 total and 47th place; and Desiree Gillaspy with a final-round 83 for a 232 total and 49th place.

Also, Sophie Bergland carded an 82 for a 238 total and 66th place while Lucy Robson recorded an 81 for a 243 total and 71st place.

Bergland finished tied for fifth place in par-3 scoring at even par. Gillaspy had one eagle in the tournament while Hirsch was 13th with her eight birdies.

Cal Poly will compete in the Big West Conference Championship next Sunday through Tuesday at the Kapalua Bay Golf Club in Lahaina, Hawaii.
