Three Freshmen Lead Cal Poly to Third Place in Big West Championship

EL MACERO, Calif. – Led by three freshmen in the top 10, the Cal Poly women's golf team is third after the first round of play in the 2015 Big West Conference Championship on Sunday at the El Macero Country Club.

Sophie Bergland (pictured at right) is tied for third place with two other golfers with one-under-par 71s while Jamie Binns is seventh with a 73 and Jamie Harada is tied for eighth place with two others, all with 74s on the 6,101-yard, par-72 course.

Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs carded a four-person five-over-par 293 total. Five-time defending Big West champion UC Davis leads with an even-par 288 total followed by Hawaii at 291. There are eight teams in the field.

UC Davis' Blair Lewis is the individual leader after blasting a four-under 68.  With a two-under 70, Rainbow Wahine Nichole Cruz owns the second slot while UC Riverside's Savannah Vilaubi and UC Davis' Andrea Wong are tied for third with Bergland at 71.

Cal Poly junior Madison Hirsch is tied for 11th place with a 75 while Desiree Gillaspy's 79 placed her in a tie for 31st place.

Round two of the three-day event tees off Monday at 9 a.m. Live scoring can be found at www.gopoly.com and admission to the event is free.

The winning team advances to the NCAA Division I women's regionals, to be held at four sites from May 7-9. This year's regional sites include Loonie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, N.C.; Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.; Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas; and Entrada at Snow Canyon in St. George, Utah.

The six-day NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship is scheduled for May 22-27 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
