Cal Poly Settles for Second Place in Battle at the Rock

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's golf team settled for a second-place finish behind host UC Riverside following the final round of the Battle at the Rock on Tuesday at the Oak Quarry Golf Club.

Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs carded a final-round four-person 313 total, finishing 45 strokes behind the Highlanders. Cal State San Marcos placed third, six strokes behind Cal Poly. Entering the final round, Cal Poly was 33 strokes behind UC Riverside and 13 strokes in front of the Cougars.

Two Mustangs placed in the top 10.

Both Madison Hirsch, competing on the team, and Jamie Binns, competing as an individual, finished with 13-over-par 229 totals and tied for eighth place. Binns carded a final-round 74 while Hirsch checked in with a 77.

Sophie Bergland finished just out of the top 10, placing 11th with a 231 total following her final-round 76.

Completing Cal Poly's scoring were Meridith Hirsch with her third round of 80 for a 240 total and 17th place and Jamie Harada and Desiree Gillaspy, tied for 18th place with 241 totals. Harada carded an 82 Tuesday while Gillaspy recorded an 80.

Individual co-champions were Brittani Ferraro and Hannah Facchini, both of UC Riverside. Both carded final-round 75s for four-over-par 220 totals. Facchini defeated Ferraro in a playoff. Kassandra Rivera claimed third place with a 71 for a 225 aggregate.

Cal Poly will compete in the Big West Conference Championship on April 19-21 at the El Macero Country Club near Davis.
