Cal Poly Seventh After First Round of Pizza Hut Thunderbird Invitational

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Desiray Gillaspy and Meridith Hirsch carded 78s in the opening round of the Pizza Hut Thunderbird Invitational on Thursday at the Sunbrook Golf Course, leading the Cal Poly women's golf team to seventh place.

One more round will be played Friday morning.

Georgetown leads the 14-team field with an 11-over-par 299 total, eight strokes ahead of Grand Canyon. Oral Roberts is third at 309.

Cal Poly carded a four-person 317 total and is just three strokes out of the top five.

Gillaspy (pictured at right) was followed in the Mustang team scoring by Madison Hirsch and Sophie Bergland, both with 79s. Jamie Harada carded an 81 and Jamie Binns an 82.

Meridith Hirsch is competing as an individual, as is Helen Davis, who posted an 84.

Individual leader after 18 holes is Jacquelyn Eleey of Georgetown with a three-under-par 69, one stroke ahead of South Dakota's Abby Dufrane. Charlotte Jaengkit of Grand Canyon shares this place with Lauren Gros of Georgetown, both with 72s.
