Cal Poly Finishes Third in Santa Clara Colby Invitational

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Cal Poly women's golf team settled for a third-place finish, 10 strokes off the pace, following the final round of play in the Santa Clara Colby Invitational on Tuesday at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club.

Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs carded a four-person final-round 319 on the 6,146-yard, par-72 course, finishing with a 54-hole 73-over-par 937 aggregate.

UC Riverside claimed the team title with a 927 total following a final-round 313 while Santa Clara was second at 936 after its 309 total in the final round.

Brittani Ferraro of UC Riverside captured top individual honors with a final-round 72 and a five-over-par 221 total, one stroke ahead of Santa Clara's Annie Freman. Isabella Salant of Santa Clara's "B" team was third at 229.

Cal Poly's top finisher was freshman Jamie Binns (pictured at right) with a final-round 82 and a 15-over-par 231 total, placing in a tie for fifth place with Savannah Vilaubi of UC Riverside.

Other Mustang scores were a 78 for a 234 total and ninth place by Sophie Bergland, an 84 for a 236 total and 11th place by Madison Hirsch, a 79 for a 241 total and 16th place by Desiree Gillaspy, and an 80 for a 241 total and 16th place by Jamie Corr.

Competing as individuals, Helen Davis finished 14th with a 78 for a 238 total while Meridith Hirsch placed 40th with a final-round 90 and a 259 total.

Cal Poly will host the Firestone Grill Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.
