Hirsch Leads Cal Poly to Seventh-Place Finish in Wyoming Intercollegiate

PALM DESERT, Calif. — Madison Hirsch placed in the top 20 and led the Cal Poly women's golf team to a seventh-place finish in the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Sunday at The Classic Club's Troon Golf Course.

Hirsch (pictured at right) carded a final-round 77 to post a 54-hole 16-over-par 232 total on the 6,112-yard, par-72 layout, finishing in a tie for 18th place.

Mustang teammate Sophie Bergland finished in a tie for 28th place after her final-round 79 gave her a 19-over-par 235 total.

As a team, Cal Poly posted a four-person, 54-hole 938 total following a final-round 313 aggregate. The Mustangs entered the final round tied with Southern Utah for sixth place but the Thunderbirds posted a 311 to finish two strokes ahead of Cal Poly.

San Jose State claimed the team title with a 29-over-par 893 total following a tournament-best 292 Sunday. New Mexico State was second at 917 while College of Charleston was third at 919. There were 16 schools in the two-day tournament.

Second-round leader Megan Osland of San Jose State claimed a seven-stroke victory with rounds of 74, 71 and 72 for a one-over-par 217 total. Charlotte Jaengkit of Grand Canyon and Elizabeth Schultz of San Jose State shared second place at 224.

In addition to Hirsch and Bergland, Cal Poly's other scoring golfers were Jamie Binns, tied for 33rd place with a final-round 78 for a 236 total; Jamie Harada, tied for 39th place with a 79 for a 238 total; and Jamie Corr, also with a final-round 79 for a 239 total and a tie for 45th place.

Cal Poly returns to action Oct. 12-14 at the Seattle University Invitational, to be held at the Tacoma Country Club.
