Hirsch Shoots 1-Over 74 as Cal Poly Finishes 5th at Big West Championship

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Madison Hirsch shot a 1-over-par 74 on Tuesday at San Luis Obispo Country Club, posting Cal Poly's best round during the three-day Big West Conference Women's Golf Championship, as the Mustangs also improved upon their finish from a year ago.

The sophomore fired back-to-back birdies on the 10th (476 yards) and 11th (482) holes, both par-5s. She also birdied another par-5, on 7 (432 yards), on her way to a total of 234 (78-82-74), for 18th place.

Taylor Yoshitake (79-75-77) and Morgan Thomas (81-75-75), both seniors, led Cal Poly over the duration of the tournament, with 231s, tying for 13th.

Thomas (pictured at far right, along with Hirsch, at left) continued her rapid ascent up the leaderboard for the second day in a row. After opening in 26th place, she had already risen seven spots by Monday, before moving up six more in the final tally, thanks largely to birdies on the par-5 first (492), the par-4 ninth (333) and No. 10.

Yoshitake also moved up on back-to-back days, jumping two others in the third round, in which she birdied the par-four 16th (377 yards). She earned second-team All-Big West Conference honors.

Freshman Jamie Corr added a 235 (75-80-80), tying for 19th while finalizing the team score at a fifth-place 931 (313-312-306), 19 fewer strokes than last season's sixth-place total. Corr birdied holes two (par-4; 312 yards) and eight (par-3; 155) on the last day.

The Mustangs were two shots ahead of UC Riverside (933; 316-310-307), 11 in front of Cal State Fullerton (942; 308-317-317) and 22 above Hawai'i (953; 321-315-317).

No. 35-ranked UC Davis, which led wire-to-wire, won its fifth consecutive team title, carding an 895 aggregate (294-297-304). Cal State Northridge was second (at 911; 307-296-308), ahead of Long Beach State (922; 304-313-305) and UC Irvine (923; 305-306-312).

Individually, CSUN senior Clariss Guce (whose 4-under on Monday held up as the best single round the course saw over the three days) and Fullerton freshman Martina Edberg finished at 217, before Edberg won a one-hole playoff to settle top honors.

UC Riverside junior Savannah Vilaubi, who finished in fifth, accounted for Tuesday's best score, at 3-under, strung together on four birdies against just one bogey.

The Aggies, whose streak is the second-longest in conference history, will play at the West Regional at Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Wash. from May 8-10. At-large selections for regionals will be announced at 3 p.m. April 28 on The Golf Channel.
