Mustangs to Host Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The Cal Poly women's golf team will host the Firestone Grill Cal Poly Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande.

Gonzaga captured the team title a year ago but will not return to defend its crown. A total of 12 teams are entered, including two teams from the host Mustangs. Savana Bezdicek of Northern Arizona claimed the individual title in the 2012 event, but the Lumberjacks are not entered in this year's field.

Following a practice round Sunday, the approximately 70 golfers will play Round One on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. start from the first and 10th tees. Final round is set for Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. An awards ceremony will follow the final round.

In addition to Cal Poly's two teams, other schools scheduled to compete include CSU Bakersfield, Cal State Northridge, UC Riverside, Cal State Monterey Bay, Sonoma State, Seattle, Dixie State, Southern Utah, Santa Clara and Weber State.

Cal Poly has been led this fall by senior Taylor Yoshitake (pictured at right) with a 73.6 scoring average, including a first-place finish in the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate two weeks ago with a 213 total for 54 holes. Sophomore Madison Hirsch shattered the school record with a 66 en route to a first-place finish in the Firestone Grill Invitational at Monarch Dunes in September and she has a 76.3 scoring average for the season.

Also competing on Cal Poly's "A" team will be Jamie Corr, Morgan Thomas and Asia Adell. Mustangs on the Cal Poly "B" team include Alex Phillips, Giovanna Ascolani, Laura Howard, Lexie Price and Montana Kosty. Carolane Gariepy will compete as an individual.

This fall, the Mustangs have won the Firestone Grill Invitational and finished 10th in the Rose City Collegiate at Portland and 14th in the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate.

Cal Poly (2002, 2004, 2005) and Cal State Northridge (2002, 2003, 2010) have won the Lamkin Grip Invitational three times each while UC Davis (2006, 2007) has a pair of titles.
