Cal Poly Finishes Second in CSUB Spring Invitational

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Madison Hirsch carded a final-round 78 to help the Cal Poly women's golf team to a second-place finish in the CSUB Spring Invitational, which concluded a two-day, 54-hole run Tuesday at the Bakersfield Country Club.

Hirsch (pictured at right) finished with a three-round 10-over-par 232 total for fifth place on the 6,200-yard, par-74 course while Asia Adell posted a final-round 79 for a 233 total and a sixth-place tie.

As a team, Cal Poly posted a four-person 47-over-par 935 total, finishing 19 strokes behind team champion Cal State Northridge (916) in the five-team tournament hosted by CSU Bakersfield.

Cal Poly also entered a "B" team and that squad actually had an individual with a better score than the five Mustangs on the "A" team. Drew Thomas checked in with a final-round 73 for an eight-over-par 233 total and fourth place. The Mustang "B" team finished third with a 953 total.

Elisabeth Haavardsho of Cal State Northridge, who broke the course record with a 67 Monday, added a 78 to her total Tuesday and won the individual title with a three-under-par 219 aggregate.

Clariss Guce, also of Cal State Northridge, was second at 221 following her final-round 72 while Morgan Fitts of South Dakota State claimed third with a 229 total.

Cal Poly's other "A" golfers were Kirsten Locke with a final-round 81 for a 236 total and ninth place, Taylor Yoshitake with a final-round 78 for a 240 total and 10th place, and Alex Phillips with a final-round 78 for a 241 total and 11th place.

On the Mustang "B" squad, Morgan Thomas had a 76 for a 233 total and shared sixth place with Adell while Montana Kosta recorded an 80 for a 2346 total and 15th place. Laura Howard carded an 80 for a 252 total and 19th place while Giovanna Ascolani recorded an 88 for a 253 total and 21st place.

Coach Scott Cartwright's Mustangs return to action April 15-16 at the Lady Bulldog Invitational hosted by Fresno State at the Copper River Country Club in Fresno.
