SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Devin Stanback scored a team-high 18 points for Cal Poly on Tuesday night, and freshman Gianna Silvestri added 15 points entirely from behind the arc in her first collegiate game, leading the Mustang women's basketball team to an 87-65 season-opening win over Academy of Art University.
Cal Poly started hot, as a jumper from Malia Holt put the Mustangs up 7-2 two-and-a-half minutes from tip-off in Mott Athletics Center.
Academy of Art, however, answered with an 11-0 run, taking a 13-7 lead on a 3-pointer by Josselyn Morris with 5:07 to play in the opening quarter, en route to a 19-16 Urban Knights advantage after the period.
The Mustangs regained the lead at 31-29, moving in front for good with 3:51 remaining to halftime when Alicia Roufosse converted a layup.
Closing the first half on a 12-2 run, Cal Poly headed to the break up 38-31 after Silvestri sank back-to-back 3s, connecting from deep 25 seconds prior to intermission and then again just two seconds before the horn.
Art U, shorthanded suiting up only six players, had three players play all 40 minutes, and a fourth 35. Brianna Cates had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Knights (Division II PacWest Conference).
A pair of free throws from Roufosse stretched the Mustang lead to 49-34 with 2:44 elapsed in the third quarter, capping an 8-0 run, on the way to a 64-48 lead heading into the fourth.
Cal Poly led by as many as 24 on the evening, pulling ahead 85-61 on a Roufosse jumper with 2:28 to go in regulation, which came after Silvestri's fifth and final 3.
Silvestri, a grad of Sacred Heart Cathedral in San Francisco, finished 5-of-9 from 3-point range in her debut, 5-for-10 overall.
Stanback shot 8-for-15 and corralled seven rebounds, while Holt added 13 points along with eight assists and four steals on the night.
Roufosse secured a team-best nine boards, and senior point guard Dye Stahley distributed a career-high nine assists.
