Cal Poly Wins Blue-Green Rivalry Big West Conference Opener Over UCSB

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Led by a combined 55 points from juniors Dynn Leaupepe and Lynn Leaupepe, the Cal Poly women's basketball team won its Big West Conference opener Thursday night in Mott Athletics Center, 78-67 to claim the Blue-Green Rivalry matchup over UC Santa Barbara.

Dynn Leaupepe's season-high 29 points were just two off her career high. After beginning this week ranked No. 24 in the nation in free-throw accuracy, she went 11-for-11 from the line in the victory, upping her percentage to .911 on the year.

Meanwhile Lynn Leaupepe scored 26 points on 9-for-13 shooting.

The twins from Camarillo each almost produced double-doubles, as Lynn grabbed nine rebounds and Dynn eight.

Mustang senior forward Hannah Gilbert added 13 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in her 72nd consecutive start. Now with 562 career rebounds, she's 11 back of moving to No. 8 in school history.

Fellow senior forward Amanda Lovely had eight points along with a game-high 12 rebounds, and junior guard Gabby Grupalo distributed a career-best seven assists.

Cal Poly (5-8) had a 48-28 points-in-the-paint advantage as well as a 47-28 edge in rebounding and a 13-7 upper hand in second-chance points.

The Gauchos (5-9) led 17-14 after the first quarter (during which they took their largest lead of the night at 15-6) and then 35-29 at the break, setting the stage for a 49-32 Mustang second-half rally.

The Mustangs' largest lead all evening, 63-51, came with 5:49 remaining in the fourth quarter when Dynn Leaupepe sank a jumper to cap a 26-6 run dating back to the 6:18 mark of the third period.

Cal Poly will continue conference play at home by hosting CSUN (8-7, 1-0) at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7.
