Cal Poly Picks Up 77-66 Road Win Over CSUN on ESPN3

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Dynn Leaupepe and Beth Balbierz combined for 45 points at CSUN on Saturday evening, leading the Cal Poly women's basketball team to a 77-66 Big West Conference win on ESPN3 at The Matadome.

After the Matadors jumped out to a 6-2 lead two minutes in, the Mustangs scored the ensuing 11 points, part of a 20-2 run that established a 22-8 lead with 1:52 left in the first quarter.

Leaupepe, a sophomore guard, was 7-for-8 (including 2-for-2 from 3-point range) for 16 points in the opening period, which Cal Poly ended ahead 27-15. She finished with 24 points (on 11-for-16 shooting) while also grabbing six rebounds.

A 3-pointer by Balbierz, a senior guard, gave the Mustangs (13-13, 6-7) their largest first-half lead: 33-15 with 9:19 remaining in the quarter. CSUN (6-20, 4-8) closed the deficit to 46-36 at halftime.

Balbierz had 13 points by the break, finishing with 21 to go with a career-high six assists.

Another 3 by Balbierz put Cal Poly in front 56-40 nearly five minutes into the second half, before layups by junior forward Hannah Gilbert and Leaupepe produced the largest lead all night, 60-40, with 3:20 left in the third.

After beginning the fourth ahead 64-50, the Mustangs took a 71-54 advantage on a fastbreak leading to Dynn assisting her twin sister Lynn for a layup with 7:03 to go. Lynn secured a team-best seven boards in the victory.

A Balbierz layup with 5:42 remaining provided the largest margin of the fourth quarter, 75-56, on the way to sweeping the season series.

Gilbert added 16 points, while senior point guard Lisa Marie Sanchez tied her career high with nine assists.

Cal Poly will return home to host Long Beach State (18-7, 7-4) at 7 p.m. Wednesday and UC Santa Barbara (10-16, 7-5) at 2 p.m. Saturday in Mott Athletics Center.
