UC Davis Pulls Away From Cal Poly For 82-71 Home Win

DAVIS, Calif. — Lisa Marie Sanchez had a game-high 21 points to lead a trio of Cal Poly women's basketball players scoring at least 15 Wednesday night, but UC Davis pulled away in The Pavilion for an 82-71 Big West Conference home win.

The Aggies scored the game's initial six points, but the Mustangs responded to end the first quarter tied at 18.

UC Davis (14-9, 7-3) then took its largest first-half lead on a putback from Pele Gianotti making it 33-27 with 3:17 left until the break.

A layup by Sanchez, a senior point guard making her return to the starting lineup following a two-game absence due to injury, closed the deficit to 35-31 at halftime.

Sanchez had 14 first-half points on the way to finishing 7-for-16 from the floor (including 3-for-9 from 3-point range) and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, where she's now a conference-best 40-for-45 (.888) on the year.

Hannah Gilbert had eight rebounds at the half en route to 17 for the game (the fourth performance this season with at least 15 boards by the junior forward).

The Mustangs (11-12, 4-6) opened the second half on a 5-0 run, and also led 44-43 following a layup by sophomore guard Dynn Leaupepe with 4:52 left in the third. The Aggies, however, came back for a 56-51 advantage by the end of the period.

UC Davis went up 63-53 on a 3 by Celia Marfone with 7:06 left in the fourth quarter, and then established a 70-57 lead on a layup by Alyson Doherty with 4:58 remaining.

A 3-pointer from the top of the arc by senior guard Beth Balbierz, a Folsom native, got it back to a single-digit margin (75-66) with 2:28 to go, but the Aggies didn't allow the Mustangs to get any closer down the stretch.

Making her first start of the season, Leaupepe added 16 points, while Balbierz finished with 17. Fellow sophomore guard Lynn Leaupepe had team highs of four steals and three blocks.

Cal Poly will return home to host UC Riverside (15-7, 8-0) at 4 p.m. Saturday.

About 30 former Mustangs will play in the Alumni Game open to the public at 11:15 a.m., followed by a 12:30 brunch held in the Stampede Club Tent outside Mott Athletics Center.
