SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Ariana Elegado had 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Cal Poly women's basketball team to a 70-68 Big West Conference home win over UC Riverside on Saturday evening in Mott Athletics Center.

Cal Poly (8-5, 13-12) raced out to a 24-7 lead over the first 13 minutes and 15 seconds, before the Highlanders (7-6, 16-11) rallied toward the end of the half, cutting it to 33-27 by the break.

The second half started in closer fashion, although the Mustangs gained some separation by the 10:39 mark, going up 52-41 on a 3-pointer by junior point guard Lisa Marie Sanchez (who finished with nine points after making all of her shots from behind the arc).

Sanchez is now 12 of 18 from 3-point range this season.

UCR pulled within 62-60 with 1:53 remaining, but Cal Poly sank three free throws over the ensuing minute for a cushion down the stretch.

The senior guard also now has 1,427 career points — 27 away from tying Megan Harrison (2005-09) for No. 3 in school history.

Fellow senior guard Kristen Ale added 10 points on the night.
