Seniors Lead Cal Poly to 72-64 Win Over UC Davis, 5-2 Big West Start

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly's trio of seniors, Kristen Ale, Ariana Elegado and Taryn Garza, led the Mustang women's basketball program to a 72-64 Big West win over UC Davis on Thursday night in Mott Athletics Center, moving the team into first place (at 5-2) in the conference standings, a half-game ahead of Long Beach State and Hawai'i (both 4-2).

Ale finished 4 of 8 from 3-point range on the way to 17 points. It was the fifth time this season she has made at least three from long range; the end result of four matched her single-game career best while placing her scoring average over the three most recent games at 16.7.

Garza, meanwhile, secured a career-high 14 rebounds to go with 14 points. She moved past the 450 mark for total boards in college on the night, and is now 42 away from 500.

Elegado had 10 points, six assists and four rebounds.

All three of the fourth-year mainstays played either 30 or 31 minutes; in all, they also helped seven other players score, as the balanced effort lifted the squad to its sixth win in eight games.

Cal Poly closed the first half on a 7-0 run comprised of back-to-back layups from Elegado and redshirt freshman forward Mary Kate Evans, followed by a 3 by Ale with only three seconds remaining.

The Mustangs (10-9 overall) kept the momentum rolling through the initial minutes of the second half, taking their largest lead at 49-32 on another Ale trifecta 4:53 in.

The Aggies (3-3, 8-10) rallied, cutting the deficit to 54-49 with 9:37 to play, but junior point guard Lisa Marie Sanchez countered with a 3 of her own two possessions later, and Cal Poly kept a lead of at least seven points the rest of the way.

Cal Poly will stay at home to face UC Irvine at 4 p.m. Saturday. The game will also mark Special Olympics Night, as all past and present Olympians get in to MAC for free.
