Late UC Davis Push Downs Mustangs, 77-69

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – UC Davis used a 12-2 run in the final 1:24 of a Big West Conference women's basketball game to defeat the Mustangs, 77-69, at the Mott Athletics Center on Thursday. The loss drops the Mustangs into second place in the conference standings with a 9-5 record and 15-12 overall. UCD improves to 7-6 in conference games and 12-14 overall.

The Mustangs return to the court on Saturday when the team will host UC Irvine for a 2 pm game on Senior Day. Prior to the start of the game Cal Poly will honor the team's four graduating seniors.

UCD shot 44 percent from the floor and made 10 of 27 from long range in the win. The Aggies went to the line 22 times and converted 19 free throws.

Cal Poly shot 40 percent from the floor and made 11 of 22 from beyond the arc. The Mustangs made four of six from the line.

UCD outrebounded the Mustangs, 44-31, while turning the ball over five more times (15-10). Cal Poly was whistled for 21 fouls compared to 12 for UCD.

Junior Ariana Elegado led the Mustangs with 22 points when she connected on six of 13 from long range. She grabbed five rebounds and dished out five assists in the loss.

Senior Jonae Ervin added 16 points on shooting seven of 16 from the floor. With 18:53 remaining in the game, Ervin made a driving layup to give her 1,001 points in her career. She becomes 11th player in school history to score 1,000 or more points in her career. Ervin added five assists and six rebounds in the game.

Senior Molly Schlemer scored 10 points with six rebounds when she was limited to 17 minutes of play due to foul trouble.

Sophomore Beth Balbierz sparked the team late in the game when she made three-consecutive three pointers to put the Mustangs up two with 3:09 left in the game, but Cal Poly would only add a layup by Schlemer with 38 seconds left on the clock in the 12-2 run.

Sydnee Fipps led the Aggies with 23 points while Alyson Doherty added 22 points. Celia Marfone scored 12 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.  

The Mustangs opened the game with Elegado holding the hot hand as she made her first four three point attempts to give Cal Poly a 19-6 advantage at 12:55. UCD would use a 15-4 run to cut the lead to two, 23-21, with 7:04 left in the half.

UCD would take its first lead of the game, 28-26, at the 4:23 mark with the Mustangs tying the game on a jumper by Ervin and the retaking the lead on a 13-footer by freshman Sarah Lipton. Cal Poly would settle for a 34-29 lead at the break.

In the second half, Cal Poly would build up an eight point lead (47-39) on a three by Elegado at 12:42. The Mustangs would not relinquish the lead until there was just 5:37 left in the game when Balbierz would connect on her 3 three's to rally the Mustangs with her last coming with 3:09 left in the game.
