Schlemer Records Double-Double in Loss to No. 24 Oklahoma State


STILLWATER, OK – Junior Molly Schlemer recorded a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds as the Cal Poly women's basketball team lost its season-opener, 90-59,  to No. 24 Oklahoma State on Friday.

Cal Poly will return to the court on Monday when the team travels to Oregon State for a game at 7 pm.

Schlemer's career-high 21 points came when she hit eight of 18 from the floor and made five of seven from the line. While she was the only Mustang in double figures, senior Brittany Woodard added nine with sophomore Kristen Ale coming off the bench to add nine. Sophomore Ariana Elegado added eight points.

Cal Poly as a team shot 35 percent from the floor and made 25 percent of its shots from long range. Last season the Mustangs were one of the nation's best at assist to turnover ratio, but today the team turned the ball over 31 times.

OSU shot 48 percent from the floor and made 30 percent from beyond the arch. OSU outblocked Cal Poly 5-1 and held an 11-5 advantage in steals with the Mustangs outrebounding OSU, 46-38.

OSU had six players score in double figures led by Toni Young's 20 points. Liz Donohoe added 16 with Brittney Martin helping  out with 15 points.  

In the opening five minutes of the game, Cal Poly held a two point lead (11-9) on a three-pointer by Ale when OSU went on a 13-6 run to hold a 22-17 advantage with 9:05 left in the period. OSU continued to push and opened a nine point lead (28-19) with 7:07 left.

Cal Poly cut the lead to seven (30-23) with 5:43 left in the half on a breakaway layup by Caroline Reeves, but OSU closed out the half on a 18-5 run and held a 48-28 lead at the break.

OSU kept the pressure up to open the second half and built a 66-39 lead midway through the final period.

With 7:42 left in the game, Woodard converted a layup making a 24 point lead (68-44).  OSU made it a 32 point game (81-49) with 3:08 left In the game and would go on to win the game 90-59.
