Tjerrild Ties for 22nd Place on Day 2 of NCAA Championship Prelims

SACRAMENTO — Making her second straight NCAA Preliminary Round appearance to start her collegiate career, Cal Poly sophomore Brooke Tjerrild tied for 22nd place in the women's pole vault on Friday night, clearing 13 feet, 4.25 inches.

Competing in the second of two flights inside Hornet Stadium, Tjerrild opened by needing only one attempt to clear her first height, 12' 10.25", and then followed up again requiring just one try to get over the bar at 13' 4.25".

She just missed her three attempts after the progression to 13' 8.25", finishing 11th in the flight and tying Washington's Annika Dayton on the overall leaderboard.

Earlier this month, Tjerrild defended her conference pole vault title, becoming only the second woman in the 23-year history of the event to win Big West championships in consecutive years.

Tjerrild, a Kinesiology major from Fresno who elevated 12 spots up from her seeding heading into regionals, will begin her junior year with a PR of 13' 7.25" (ranking No. 2 in school history).

UCLA's Elleyse Garrett claimed the last berth in qualifying for the NCAA Finals, vaulting a 12th-place height of 14' 0", while Victoria Hoggard of Arkansas jumped 14' 2" to earn the No. 1 bid in advancing on to Texas from June 5-8.

Still set to represent Cal Poly at the West Regional meet are Abibat Rahman-Davies, in the women's triple jump at 3 p.m. Saturday, and Katie Izzo, in the women's 5,000 meters at 8 p.m.
