Mustangs Earn 1st Place in 6 Events at Titan Track & Field Challenge vs. Fullerton, CSU Bakersfield, Cornell and UC Davis; Ross Also Moves to No. 8 in School History

FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal Poly won six events at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Challenge, leading the Mustang track & field program in Orange County on Saturday.

Mustang sophomore Julie Zweng established a career-best while winning the women's high jump, clearing 5 feet, 7 inches. Julianna Ruotolo and Danielle Taylor each jumped 5' 3" for sixth place, as did Caice Lanovaz (good for eighth on number of attempts).

Cal Poly freshman Bikram Thiara also picked up a victory in the men's 400-meter hurdles, with a performance of 54.41 seconds. Later on in the day, Thiara combined with Dan Cardiff, Liam Martinez and Tommy Andrews to win the 4x400m relay, clocking a time of 3:23.48.

Allison Scranton won the discus throw with a season-best mark of 160' 7". The junior also took fifth place in the shot put, posting a 39' 8.75".

Megan Mooney also earned a season-best for the third meet in a row, winning the javelin with a throw of 139' 2". Teammate Sarah Greenberg also tallied a fifth-place 112' 5".

Cal Poly's sixth first-place showing of the meet occurred in the women's pole vault, where Brooke Tjerrild, a two-time 2018 Big West Conference Athlete of the Week, won with a clearance of 13' 1.5". Freshmen teammates Kayla Myers (12' 1.5") and Codie Wilshusen (11' 7.75") added seventh and 11th-place pole vaults.

Meanwhile, Molly Ross moved to No. 8 in school history for the 100m hurdles, finishing second with a time of 14.03 (just four-hundredths behind Cornell's Brittany Stenekes). Ciara Levy, also a member of the all-time Cal Poly Top 10, matched her PR with a third-place 14.10. Lanovaz was 10th (at 15.30), ahead of Hana Welsh in 12th (15.60).

Dane Clemensen shattered his javelin PR, taking second with a mark of 181' 10", and Ryan Gonter added a third-place 164' 6".

Abi Iriafen almost won the women's triple jump, landing at 39' 7.75" — only a quarter-inch behind CSF's Laura Hamann (39' 8") at her home stadium. Kalesi Budei came in fourth (via a mark of 37' 1.25"), while teammates Bianca James and Juliana McCuaig were sixth (35' 7.75") and seventh (35' 3"). Iriafen also took fourth in the long jump, at 17' 11".

Thomas Heib also scored second-place points, via his 800-meter time of 1:53.58, as did Brad Beekman in the pole vault (clearing 16' 2.75"), followed by Lorenzo Sison in fifth (14' 9"). (Cal Poly had one student-athlete at the 43rd annual Stanford Invitational on Saturday, as Connor Crowe finished 25th in the 800, in 1:52.83 at Cobb Track.)

Martinez (third in 49.45 seconds) & Cardiff (fifth; 51.11) also competed in the 400 along with Jason Lewis (50.51; fourth).

Daijah Joe-Smith came in fourth place in the 100-meter dash (in 11.97 seconds), followed by Jazmin Moreno (13th at 12.41) and Iriafen (14th; 12.41). Moreno also recorded an 11th-place 200, of 25.75.

Nate Greenelsh edged sophomore teammate Chineme Allison in the men's 100-meter dash, 10.95 (ninth) and 10.96 (10th), while VJ Obiajulu was close at 11.06 (12th). Andrews (23.04) & Allison (23.22) also came in 10th and 11th in the 200-meter dash.

Another fourth-place showing was had by Will Smith for the discus (reaching a season-best 155' 7"), ahead of Jacob Rickman (10th; 145' 3") and Parker Jenks (11th; 144' 2"). Jenks would also take sixth for the shot put (48' 3.5"), while Rickman came in eighth (46' 10.25").

Decathlete Bailey Thayer also high-jumped a fourth-place height: 6' 6.75".

Ann Caroline Kaseberg ran a collegiate PR of 56.83 to take fifth in the 400, followed by Ruotolo in eighth at 58.10.

John Shaw also posted a season-best, placing fifth in the triple jump, at 45' 0.25".

Alexandra Alamillo led the Mustangs in the women's 400m hurdles, clocking a sixth-place 1:03.57, ahead of Ross in seventh (1:03.80) & Welsh 10th (1:05.62).

Michelle Chandler finished seventh in the 800, with a time of 2:12.72, and Mikaela Romanini was ninth in 2:14.27. Colin Masterson also took seventh place in the hammer throw, at 152' 9".

Thayer clocked a seventh-place 110m hurdles time of 15.31, while Rickman was eighth (15.37) and Thiara ninth (15.47). In his third event of the day, Thayer took ninth in the long jump at 20' 11.25", followed by Lewis (10th; 20' 2.5"), Shaw (12th; 19' 7.5") and Rickman (15th; 18' 7.75").

Joe-Smith, Moreno, Ross and Kaseberg teamed for a season-best 4x100m relay of 47.21, before Lanovaz, Kaseberg, Ruotolo and Romanini also came in fourth for the 4x4, at 3:50.67 (another season best).

The Mustangs' decathletes and heptathletes will travel to the Sam Adams Combined Events Invitational hosted by Westmont from April 6-7, before the full squad returns with the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational at UCLA on April 14.
